Hints & Tips
Well, here are some hints and tips that you may find helpful.
If you are new to cross stitch, these tips will help you get started. If you are an experienced stitcher, you may still find some new ideas here - and if you have tips of your own that you think others may find useful, please let me know and I’ll add them. (you can use the feedback form to submit a tip).
- Before you start stitching, make sure you have everything you need; threads, scissors, needles...you don't want to make a start then realise that you're missing one of the main colours in the pattern.
- Photocopy (Xerox) your chart before you start stitching, that way you can mark off the stitches as you do them.
- Always wash your hands before starting (even if they don't look dirty). This will help keep your stitching looking clean.
- If you use an embroidery hoop, make sure you remove the hoop when you're not stitching (even for short periods of time).
- When looking for the centre of the fabric to start stitching, simply fold the fabric into quarters and mark the center stitch with a piece of thread. When you unfold the fabric, the centre will be where the thread is.
- Always stitch your top half of your crosses in the same direction.
This produces a neat finish, and gives your work a professional look.
- If you are stitching on a dark-coloured fabric, place a white cushion or teatowel beneath your work. It will let you see the holes in the Aida much more easily.
- Store your cross stitch rolled rather than folded, this prevents crease marks. Try rolling your cross stitch and storing in the centre of a cardboard tube (such as a kitchen roll tube).
- If you need to iron a finished piece of stitching, place the stitched piece face down on a fluffy towel, then iron with no higher than medium heat, and don't press down too much. This will stop the stiching getting squashed.
